Add "tags" to your photos or blog posts to make them searchable

When I get a request from a new member for some specific picture, or information, I think how useful it would be if I could find a way to search for that information. Especially if it exists on our own website! To help us search better, add tags that describe what you add. For example "1950s" or "Raritan River Railroad".

Thanks, and if you find any new pictures, please add them to the site. We'd all love to see them.

July 25, 1913 murder at Michelin Plant

I found this article - while I was looking for something else - about a brutal murder in front of the Michelin Plant. Interestingly enough, this is the second brutal crime I found that happened at the plant. I know it's not a pleasant piece of Milltown history, but I thought I'd pass it along. Has anyone heard of this crime before?

Kuhlthau Family Tree

I have been working on updating the Kuhlthau Family Tree that was prepared in 1964 for the Milltown Tercentenary by Marilynn Catchings. It does a wonderful job of showing the relationships between family members starting with Johann Heinrich Kuhlthau and his 11 children (9 of which continued to multiply in Milltown). Unfortunately there are no dates after the second generation (Conrad, Phillip, William etc.). And of course, nothing after 1964. If anyone is interested I can provide PDF images…

Historic Buildings

Has anyone checked on the progress of the Ford Avenue site? This is a historic site as the first Michilin plant in the

U.S.

Are there plans or any attempt to try to save the buildings?

I heard the historic ordinance has not been brought before the council because the clerk is reviewing the wording. Although the attorney has previously approved the ordinance, it is the clerk who has the ordinance and he stated he was going over it at home on his own time. I last inquired at a… Continue

Great turnout at our open house!

Twenty Milltown residents toured the two Museum buildings on Saturday December 6, 2008. Many of the guests were Parkview School students and their families. All three floors of the Museum were open, and the new basement exhibits were viewed for the first time by the public. Several of the adults touring the Museum expressed interest in joining the Historical Society and helping us to open the Museum more frequently.…

Visiting the Museum

The Milltown History Museum and Annex Buildings will be open for tours on Sunday November 9, 2008 from 1-4 p.m. and on Saturday December 6, 2008 from 2-4 p.m.

On Thursday, October 30, the Museum was visited by 80 fourth grade students and eight adults. The students were fascinated by what they saw. They took notes and asked lots of questions, because they are currently studying the history of their community.

That same evening, a local Cub Scout group also toured the… Continue

Interested in Milltown Family Geneology?

The Museum would love to have stories from Milltown Families for our records. Right now I am trying to research the Evans Family. Please see my page for detailed information. We can post family names here on this site if we have information so people trying to do research will know what families are represented. What do you think?

Thanks, Kathy Heilman

Will Milltown move the two houses of the Historical Museum to build a new firehouse?

Deputy Fire Chief Jules Dekovics attended a few Milltown Historical Society meetings this year to outline the need for a new firehouse. This Home News Tribune article explains the issues involved. The current buildings cannot accommodate new fire engines, expose our volunteer fire fighters to exhaust fumes, and do not have facilities for the fire fighters to shower after being exposed to hazardous materials fighting fires. He presented the MHS… Continue
