"That is pretty interesting. I had not heard of that before. The paper looks like a good source of info. Are they available on line or did you go the library to look at them? Thanks, Kathy"

Profile Information

About Me:- Tell us about yourself
Born in Pennsylvania, lived in Sommerville, NJ as a young child, then Chicago and settled in East Brunswick. Many of my family members are interested in antiques, family geneology, and history so I have been thinking in these terms for most of my life. Personally I now gravitate to mid-century design but also appreciate other styles and periods as well.
What is your interest in Milltown history?
I am interested in historic architecture and historic industry so I am drawn to Milltown's past including all of the factories like Michelin, the Russell Playing Card Company, the Meyer Rubber Factory, the Rinky Dink, and others that continue to emerge. I am happy to be serving as the newly elected President of the Milltown Historic Society and am having fun working on a formal inventory of the town's collections.

If you would like to make a donation or have pictures that the Historical Society can copy and return please contact me.

Happy exploring!

Kathy

Please help me find the ancestors of the Evans Family of Millotwn described below

Please contact Kathy Heilman (Historical Society President) at 732 227 1480 if you have any information on the Evans family listed below. Many of them are buried in VanLiew Cemetery and the family originally arrived here in 1844. Mr. John Evans who was born in Wales , March 15, 1825, came as a young lad with his parents to America , the family settling at Belleville , New Jersey , where he remained until nineteen years of age when they moved to Milltown. They built the Forney house and later their grandson became the first Mayor of Milltown and he was also instrumental in starting the Milltown India Rubber Company.

Interested in Milltown Family Geneology?

The Museum would love to have stories from Milltown Families for our records. Right now I am trying to research the Evans Family. Please see my page for detailed information. We can post family names here on this site if we have information so people trying to do research will know what families are represented. What do you think?

Thanks, Kathy Heilman

That would be good, talked to Mr Fama last week about historic ordinance they are trying to get thru. Seems like it might be a reality very soon.

Hi Kathy,
I am sending this for a second time because I may have erased the first one.
Thank you for openning the museum on that Sunday. You went out of your way for me and I appreciate it. As Brian said "you are a very nice lady. I will send Geneology as soon as I have a little time.

Hi Kathy,
I grew up in Milltown and am currently a graduate student at Rutgers in the Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies program. For a class in architectural preservation I am interested in writing a preservation plan for a historic Milltown building like the Michelin factory or the Raritan Railroad station. I wrote more about it on my page on this site, but I would love to talk more about it with you or other members of the historical society and Milltown revitalization. I appreciate any help you can give me. It's so great to see all this interest in the preservation of Milltown's history and character. Thanks!

Hi Kathy,

Thanks so much for getting back to me. Everyone's been so helpful. I was unable to make the last general meeting because I had to work, but I should be able to come to the November meeting. I was hoping the Historical Society might have building plans, Historic American Building Survey (HABS) drawings, Sanborn fire insurance maps, info on building materials or any documentation of that sort on the rrrr station. Whatever background information I could get would be helpful. I've already run these same questions by the borough president, Brian Harto, but he said he doesn't have any. I'm crossing my fingers!! Thanks again. Also let me know if this is the best way to contact you or if you'd prefer email. My email is krismis86@msn.com.

Oh great, so nice to meet you! My dad was so into this and he told me a lot about Milltown, so now it's hard because I can't ask him anymore. I want to learn more about the history. Thank you for emailing me back.
Kristine
